Communication

Communication is the practice of conveying ideas quickly and effectively.

These are results to strive for in communication through arts in education:

  • Give us a way to communicate emotions when we can’t always find the words to use

  • Teach us how to share responsibilities and respect the contributions of others

  • Promote motivation, acceptance, and safety in the classroom

What is Art?

Art is the expression of inner feeling and application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

Art is something we do, a verb. Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions, intuitions, and desires, but it is even more personal than that: it's about sharing the way we experience the world, which for many is an extension of personality.

Art and communication

The language arts as important role to play in communication process. Listening and speaking are basic to oral communication; reading and writing are basic to written communication; and viewing and visually representing are basic to visual communication. Listening, reading, and viewing are ways of receiving information.

It is the communication of intimate concepts that cannot be faithfully portrayed by words alone. And because words alone are not enough, we must find some other vehicle to carry our intent. But the content that we instill on or in our chosen media is not in itself the art. Art is to be found in how the media is used, the way in which the content is expressed.

Art as a means of communication

Art can promote specific political viewpoints. Artists have made drawings, paintings, sculptures and many other art objects to challenge assumptions, to support causes, and to explore deep personal questions. And throughout history, art has been used for many purposes, including reinforcing or linking religious doctrine and political power.

Communication through art can be achieved in many ways that don't rely on words. Sometimes they're obvious, like a celebratory image of a political leader. But other times, artworks communicate through elements you might not notice at first, like the choice of colors, composition (the underlying form and how elements relate to one another), or how the forms are placed.

Art often explores broad ideas or themes, some more obvious than others, and art often reflects on the time period in which it was created, whether as a statement of support or a reaction against something. Art sever as a means of communicating the intention of the artists to the people.
